! am ... 32 flavors and then some.

Another constructive, packed day… If I had to narrow today down to three takeaways, I would say: image is important, know your own strengths and weaknesses, and you are responsible – not just for your library but also for your own time, for your brand, for yourself.

I cannot sum myself up in one sentence, since I am not the same person I was five years ago and will not be the same person in five years.  Today, however, I say that “I am a confident, resourceful, efficient problem solver who is driven to help the people in my community craft their own solutions.”
I will use this statement to drive changes in my personal brand by being more visible in the community.  Kia’s advice about community involvement struck home, especially her advice to choose causes and groups authentically – ones which reflect my brand attributes, and ones in which I have genuine interest. I’ll be carefully considering this issue over the next few months.

  1. Your blog very well written. It sums up everything that a good librarian should be. It inspires me to the best I can. Thanks

  2. It was so great to work with you today, Lani, and I really enjoyed our talk and finding out how similar our situations are! You make a great point about not being the same person now you were five years ago and five years from now being different still. I think this really speaks to the point as well about the need to pay attention to ourselves, track the new things we learn, write down our goals/accomplishments, and update our resumes regularly. We definitely change from day to day, and as we grow we will re-evaluate how we go about accomplishing our goals. You did a great job on the "I am" statement, and I think that is exactly the persona you emit!

  3. Choosing civic activities that you have an existing passion for is a good way to ensure that you have active participation. No one really wants group members who merely come and warm seats; in addition, it reflects poorly on the Director (as Kia said, a "celebrity") if he or she doesn't make contributions to the group.
